Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 5, 2026

1. Introduction

SpeakLike (“we”, “our”, “us”) is operated by DWB Studio. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data when you use our mobile application and web services (collectively, “the Service”).

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address, display name, and authentication provider (Google, Apple, or email/password).

2.2 Voice and Audio Data

When you complete a speaking exercise, the app records a short audio clip of your voice and transmits it to our servers at api.speaklike.app over an encrypted connection (TLS). Our server forwards that audio to Google Gemini, a third-party AI service, which converts it to text. Only the resulting text transcript is returned; the pronunciation score itself is calculated on your device by comparing that transcript to the expected sentence.

What we keep: the audio clip is held in server memory only for the few seconds needed to process your request. We do not save audio recordings to our databases or file storage, and there is no way to play back a past recording. The resulting text transcript may appear in our server diagnostic logs, which are automatically deleted after 30 days. The transcript and score you submit for an exercise are stored with your progress data for as long as your account is active (see section 8).

Google Gemini's handling: audio sent for transcription is processed by Google under the Gemini API terms and Google Privacy Policy. We do not control Google's retention of data submitted to that API.

Free plan fallback: free accounts receive a limited number of AI speech evaluations per day (currently 5). Once that daily allowance is used, speaking exercises keep working, but your audio is no longer forwarded to Google Gemini — the transcript comes instead from the speech recognition built into your device or browser. Note that some browsers' built-in speech recognition is itself processed on the browser vendor's servers rather than on your device; that is controlled by your browser, not by SpeakLike.

You can avoid voice data processing entirely by using the listening, sentence-building, and word-puzzle exercise types, which never access your microphone.

2.3 Exercise and Progress Data

We store your exercise scores, accuracy metrics, streaks, and lesson progress to provide personalized learning analytics.

2.4 Usage Data

We collect anonymized analytics via Firebase Analytics, including app opens, screen views, and crash reports via Firebase Crashlytics. This data helps us improve the app experience.

3. How We Use Your Data

  • To provide and improve the Service
  • To track your learning progress and display statistics
  • To send you notifications about your streak or new lessons (with your consent)
  • To diagnose and fix technical issues

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Google Gemini (Google) — speech-to-text transcription of speaking-exercise audio, and generation of detailed exercise feedback (see section 2.2)
  • Firebase (Google) — authentication, analytics, crash reporting, push notifications
  • YouTube IFrame API — video playback within lessons (subject to YouTube Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy)
  • RevenueCat — subscription management

We do not sell your personal data to any third party.

5. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on secure servers hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in the Europe West 1 region. We use encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to production databases is restricted to authorized personnel only.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your account and all associated data
  • Export your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent for optional data processing

You can delete your account from the app settings. To exercise other rights, contact us at privacy@speaklike.app.

7. Children's Privacy

SpeakLike is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

8. Data Retention

We retain your account data as long as your account is active. Exercise scores and progress data are retained for the lifetime of your account. Voice recordings are not retained at all — they exist only in server memory for the duration of a single transcription request (see section 2.2). Server diagnostic logs, which may contain speech transcripts, are automatically deleted after 30 days. When you delete your account, all associated data is permanently deleted within 30 days.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or in-app notification. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
